On February 12, East Rankin Academy (ERA) science students competed in the Mississippi Regional Science Bowl hosted by the Mississippi University for Women, a tournament-style academic competition that challenges and recognizes high school students’ knowledge of sciences and mathematics. Competition questions are selected randomly from disciplines such as astronomy, mathematics and physics.
ERA competed against 13 other high schools: Tupelo; Ocean Springs; Mississippi School for the Math and Sciences (MSMS) Team II; Corinth; Oxford; and Madison Central.
The ERA science team placed second, and a team from MSMS placed first.
Since the pandemic, the competition has been run in a virtual format, where, instead of competing in head-to-head matches, each team competes against all other teams, with a team’s total score determining whether or not they advance in the competition.
The winning team represents Mississippi at the National Science Bowl competition in Washington D.C. in June. 2022 was the second year in a row that the competition has used this format.
