What You Need to Know About Mississippi Gun Laws

What You Need to Know About Mississippi Gun Laws

Mississippi gun laws regulate the possession, sale, and general use of guns and ammunition throughout the state. Among all the states, Mississippi is one of those with the most permissive gun laws, and the following is some more general information about the gun laws in Mississippi.

No Permit Is Necessary for Conceal Carrying

In Mississippi, you don't need to have a special permit to carry a concealed handgun in public spaces. This means that you can buy a gun and carry it in public without having first to take any firearm training or pass criminal background checks. With certain permits, someone could even carry a concealed weapon to places like schools and other places where it is prohibited to do so.

In just 45 days, someone who applies for a license to carry a concealed revolver or pistol and is qualified will have their license. This license stays valid for five years but one is not required to transport either a visible or concealed firearm in a vehicle. Like in the majority of the states where someone can carry a weapon without a permit, the minimum age to carry is 21 years. These states also generally require a person not to be prohibited by the law from owning a firearm if they are to carry a concealed weapon.

The State Has a High Gun Death Rate

The state of Mississippi has one of the highest gun death rates in the United States as a result of the permissive gun laws. Throughout the United States, between two and three million temporary restraining orders are put into effect each year. This is likely true for states that have similarly permissive gun laws that enable a majority of people to own and carry guns. This is worsened by the fact that someone does not need a state permit to purchase a firearm.

There are also no assault weapon laws and the magazine capacity is unrestricted. This is a troublesome issue for anyone who wants to feel safe and secure wherever they go because it's impossible to know just who might be carrying a weapon. It's important to enact an extreme risk law to make it a bit safer for people to go about their daily lives.

It's Extremely Easy to Purchase and Carry a Weapon

As mentioned, there is very little regulation on who can buy and carry a weapon and why. This makes it extremely easy to get one and keep it on you. This is enhanced by the fact that out-of-state carry permits are also recognized in Mississippi. People can therefore easily move into the state with weapons and face no potential repercussions.

When applying for a gun permit in the states that do require permits, you have 60 days to start the process of appealing if you are initially denied. The first appeal you make is called reconsideration and usually takes 60 days to complete. This process may deter someone who wants to get a gun for less than ideal reasons, making it appreciably harder to put a gun in the wrong hands. Without this, there would be regular occurrences on the national news of one gun-related incident or another.

This is some of the information out there about gun laws in Mississippi, so it's good to keep them in mind if you're visiting or want to relocate there. Even residents should know them to know the necessary safety measures to take and safety regulations to push for in a bid to make their state safer and more welcoming.

This is a very biased piece. I suggest you further educate yourself on the subject.

Federal laws require background checks prior to purchasing a gun from a gun store. Plus you will NEVER get a permit without a background check. But if it’s a private sale or gun show that’s different

Mississippi has a high murder rate because we have a couple of cities, run by democrats, where societal norms for decent people have completely deteriorated.

They are firearms not guns. A gun is something on a battleship. Look it up Under federal code there is no such thing as a gun

Obviously written by an anti gun liberal trying to skew public opinion with their bias. Definitely not a “news” piece.

Not knowing who is carrying a gun is a deterrent. This article makes it seem like Mississippis gun laws are a bad thing. It’s called the 2nd amendment!
