5 of the Best Caterpillar Diesel Engines

Caterpillar, or CAT, is one of the most well-known names when it comes to engines. Their yellow construction equipment and reliable engines are iconic and maintain global favor with professionals and enthusiasts. Throughout the decades, CAT has given us a lot of different products, but here are five of the best Caterpillar diesel engines and why we remember them so fondly.

CAT C15

After retiring the 3406E model engine, Caterpillar launched the C15 in the late 90s. From the very beginning, this lightweight, turbocharged engine showed a lot of promise. The C15 boasts horsepower at around 500. Even though Caterpillar retired the engine in 2010, it remains a popular choice for engine enthusiasts.

CAT 3406B

Caterpillar introduced the 3406 in 1973 and eventually released an upgraded version dubbed the 3406B. By the time the 3406C came out, Caterpillar added electronic elements, making the 3406B a popular choice for being a solely mechanical engine. Despite its age, fans love the 3406B because of its practicality and how they can customize the 3406B to get more power.

CAT C7

The CAT C7 was one of the best Caterpillar diesel engines throughout the early 2000s. CAT designed the engine to work with medium-size trucks. It became a popular choice with trucking companies. Unfortunately, CAT retired the C7 in 2010 because the company did not want to make continual adjustments to follow changing emission regulations.

CAT 3516

The 3516 engines from Caterpillar stand out as one of the more modern pieces of technology from the company. It works with much heavier industrial settings than individual trucks or construction equipment. The 3516 provides support in mining, forestry, and drilling.

CAT 3116

The 3116 stands out as one of Caterpillar’s more successful marine engines. While the company began manufacturing marine engines in the 1930s, the 3116 found its audience in powerboats and for inspiring future models. Many elements of the 3116 went into the 3126 and even the C7, which proved to be one of CAT’s largest success stories.
