Tips and Tricks for Beginner Kitesurfers

Whether you’ve been to a ton of kitesurfing lessons or you simply saw a video of the hobby and thought it looked interesting, we have the information you need to know! Kitesurfing is a fun, exciting watersport that takes a bit of dedication to get the hang of. Read on to learn a few key tips and tricks for beginner kitesurfers.

Don’t Yank the Bar

You’ll encounter unexpected situations while on your board—you may get too much power, or you might start to lose balance. No matter what happens, don’t pull on the bar. We understand—it’s instinct to want to reach out and grab the nearest thing! But pulling on the bar gives you more power. When you’re already zooming and you pull on the bar, you can create a sticky situation! Instead of pulling, release the bar or gradually push it away from you.

Keep Your Chest Toward Your Kite

The proper position when kitesurfing is leaned back a bit with your chest facing your kite. Leaning back will prevent you from tipping over, and keeping your chest squared up to your kite will allow you to have more quick and effective control over the bar if you need to adjust your power.

Use the Right Equipment

None of these tips will help at all if you have the wrong equipment. Beginners generally want to stick with bow kites and a large board. The bow kite will be easy to depower and relaunch, while a large board is good for helping you find balance on the water.

If you want more of a challenge, hybrid kites allow you to perform more tricks. If you pair one with a smaller board, you’ll be more agile. The right kitesurfing equipment comes down to what you want to accomplish, but we recommend sticking with the beginner gear for now.

Now that you know these tips and tricks for beginner kitesurfers, we hope you have a better sense of how to be safe and have fun while enjoying this watersport!
