A Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Face Mask

Despite lifted face mask mandates and a general relaxation of preventative COVID-19 measures, many people still choose to wear a face mask. Plus, the benefits extend beyond preventing COVID-19 contamination, as wearing one can be incredibly helpful in hospitals or other high-risk areas for infection. With so many benefits, why not try your hand at creating your own? Read on for a step-by-step guide to making a face mask.

Necessary Materials

The key to making an effective face mask is selecting the appropriate fabric. Experts recommend using 100 percent cotton fabric for its breathability and filtration properties. Alternatively, stretch poplin fabric is a great material. Other than the main fabric, you’ll need elastic bands or fabric ties, a sewing machine or a needle and thread, scissors, and a ruler.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Begin by cutting two 8-inch squares of your chosen fabric and two 6-inch lengths of elastic or fabric ties. Make sure to wash, dry, and iron the fabric before cutting to ensure proper sizing.

Place the two fabric squares on top of each other, ensuring the patterned or “right side” of the fabric is facing inward. Then, position your elastic or ties in each of the four corners, sandwiched in between the fabric layers, with approximately 1/2 inch extending beyond the edge. The elastic or ties should form loops on the inside of the mask when complete.

Now, sew a straight stitch around the entire square, approximately 1/4 inch from the edge. Be sure to leave a 2-inch gap on one of the sides. This will allow you to turn the mask once sewn. Be careful to avoid sewing over the elastic or ties.

Turn the mask right-side-out by pulling it through the gap. Then, press the edges flat and fold in the open edges. Stitch all the way around, closing the gap in the process. Finally, create two to three pleats in the mask by folding the fabric and sewing across the width of the mask, approximately 1/4 inch from the edge, to ensure a better fit.

Tips and Best Practices

Now that you have your very own homemade face mask, follow these tips and best practices for optimal effectiveness:

  1. Wash your hands before handling your mask, and avoid touching the inside.
  2. Secure the mask snugly around your nose and mouth, ensuring there are no gaps.
  3. Wash your mask after each use with detergent or soap, and avoid using a wet or damp mask.

This step-by-step guide to making a face mask will empower you to create a customized mask and ensure you can protect yourself in high-risk environments. You might even start your own mask-making business!
