Happy Summer! Hopefully everyone is enjoying the summer break despite the storms, power outages, and heat. Summer is a time to relax and rejuvenate so that we will return to school excited about the year ahead. Summer is also a time for the school to get prepared for the upcoming year. While you are enjoying your summertime activities, the administration and support staff are busy. When you return to school in August, hopefully you will notice some improvements and enhancements. We are creating a space where students are proud to come each day and are motivated to do their best.
If you have driven around campus lately, you have likely noticed improvements in the front and back of the school. The front parking lot is being repaved. In the back near the football fi eld, you will notice construction as well. We will be adding additional parking for football, baseball, and softball games. We look forward to using these additions in the near future.
On a diff erent note, summer break consists of ten weeks without direct instruction. As a result, if students are not purposefully engaged in some type of brain activity, they could lose progress or growth gained from the previous year. To avoid summer loss, here are some suggestions:
1. Have your children read something for at least 10 minutes each day. They can read a book, pull up an article on their computer, or listen to a podcast. Have them explain to you what they are reading or listening to so that they are still practicing the skills of good readers. Research states that reading 10 minutes each day “exposes students to 694,889 words per year” (Beers and Probst, 2017, 135).
2. Get outside and explore. Step away from the video games and phone apps to enjoy the sunshine. Stay active by walking or running, which also helps the brain remain healthy.
3. Practice ACT skills for a few minutes each day. Perhaps rotate between math and English questions. Just a little bit of practice will help boost ACT scores. Students can use ACT.org, KHAN Academy or any number of other online resources to access practice items.
4. Enjoy the summer, but set a goal to carve out a few minutes each day to grow. This practice develops discipline and habits that will support students when they return to school in August.
Finally, I would like to share a few important dates for the start of school. InfoSnap passcodes will be sent on July 17, 2023; therefore, registration will begin after that date. Residency must be completed before you can register.
