Pelahatchie Elementary is excited to start the new school year with a new committee of students called the Chief Champions. These students were selected at the end of the 2022-2023 school year and will serve the school in a few very important areas with an overall mission of making students feel welcome at school while also working together to make decisions that will promote kindness on campus. The committee is currently composed of rising 1st through 6th grade students that are eager to help serve our school.
Many of these students have either been a new student before or have an immediate family member with a military connection and have experience with the challenges that these life events can present, allowing them to use that experience to help others feel welcomed at a new school. These students will be matched up by grade level with new students to our school and will show the new student around the school, be a friendly face on the playground, and offer to sit with the new student at lunch. They will also help at school events, such as author visits and Start With Hello Week. Finally, the group will be led by the older students of the team to discover and implement new ways to promote kindness on campus.
The committee met for the first time in May to share breakfast and get to know each other. They will meet again in the second half of July to prepare for the upcoming school year. At this meeting, they will work together to share ideas and practice how to best meet new students in order to help them transition into our school community.
We are excited to see how these friendly faces will make a positive impact on their peers and our school community this year!
