The red brick church on the corner of Munsterman Ave. and W. Church St., has been a stable presence since the 1870s. The church has been known for decades as Pelahatchie United Methodist Church. The building itself has undergone many developments - different sides of the street to name one - throughout its lifetime.
The church was organized in 1878 by Captain Seymore and Rev. Hardy. As the town was very small, so was the church’s number of members. In 1907, through the development of a sawmill, the Town of Pelahatchie underwent a growth in population and by 1914 the membership rose to 400 members. But in 1934 when the sawmill was destroyed by a fire - and also the jobs of over 1,000 workers - Pelahatchie’s population was diminished.
The halt in growth of the town also slowed the growth in members at the Church and other churches throughout the Town. The structure that currently stands, which was built in 1952, is evidence that the Methodist church marched forward.
Presently, as of July 5, 2023, the church has undergone a name change to The Pelahatchie Cornerstone Church. With this change, the church has also appointed Rev. Ted Giordano. Rev. Giordano has served at Puckett, Johns, Flowood, Drakes, Bradley Chapel, Camp Wesley Pines, Pelahatchie, Gulde, and Van Winkle Methodist Churches. He has a total of 54 years in the ministry. Rev. Giordano is married to Lanelle Giordano. The Giordano’s reside in Brandon.
Sunday morning worship service is at 10 a.m. at Pelahatchie Cornerstone Church. The church invites all to worship with them.
