Pelahatchie High School likes to see alumni live out their dreams for the future. It’s also good when they choose to give back to the community that helped them to grow and achieve what they needed to reach those dreams.
Pelahatchie alum, Chrystianna Beeman has chosen to do just that. She recently graduated from Jones College and is now a D3 student-athlete for Belhaven.
She says it’s easy for young students to not maintain their athletic training over the course of the summer. She wants to help others keep moving by hosting her first youth basketball camp.
Beeman continues to focus forward as she keeps growing in her basketball career, but she hasn’t lost touch with where she came from.
Beeman knew that the town of Pelahatchie did not have a lot of opportunities for young athletes to grow. This is what helped inspire her to come and give back to her community. She also says that a lot of coaches helped her to grow as an athlete. This led her in wanting to give that same inspiration to others.
Recently, Beeman partnered with her trainer, Matthew Riley, to host a youth basketball camp. Riley is also the founder of the React non-profit organization.
Riley stated that he has been training others since he was sixteen, and that he loves teaching others basketball. He considers basketball to be his ministry and wants to teach others to love the sport as he does.
Beeman and others believe it is important to have programs like this one; to help remind people that no matter where you come from, you can still achieve your dreams.
Those in the community voiced appreciation for the Pelahatchie alum coming back and giving to the young athletes; and that having more teaching opportunities like this will help the local community and students improve in the future.
