After more than a year of planning and strategizing, Pelahatchie High School (PHS) has fully implemented a new feature in the school day that is already garnering excitement from students and staff alike—Flex Block. Designed for students in grades 7-12, this flexible time is revolutionizing how the school provides personalized education, academic support, and enrichment opportunities.
But what exactly is Flex Block? Simply put, it’s a designated portion of the school day that allows students to tailor their learning experience to their individual needs and interests. Whether it’s extra academic support, exploring a hobby, or diving into something new, Flex Block gives students a unique opportunity to make the most of their time at school.
At PHS, Flex Block offerings are as diverse as they are engaging. Students can choose from activities such as baking biscuits, learning to play pickleball, or even discovering how to register for a boating license. Those with a passion for movement can take up salsa dancing, while others may use their time to boost school spirit and assist with spirit signs and pep rally tasks. During flex time, there is a place for everyone.
A New Era of Personalized Learning: The primary goal of Flex Block is to offer students personalized education. “Flex Blocks allow students to get what they need, when they need it,” said Ms. Voncille Anderson, principal of PHS. “Whether they’re excelling in class and looking for enrichment opportunities or needing extra support to stay on track, this program helps us meet students where they are.”
Flex Blocks aren’t just about academics either. They’re an opportunity for students to receive social-emotional support and take a break from the usual routine to focus on activities they genuinely enjoy. “It’s been a great way to help students balance their school day,” Ms. Key added. “They can take a breather and re-energize, which has made a big difference in how they approach the rest of the day.”
The Impact on Students: For students at PHS, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. “It’s nice to have a break in the day where I can do something fun that is of interest to me,” said one student. “I signed up for Ms. Herrington’s cooking class, and it’s something I now tell my friends to sign up for every week!”
As Flex Block continues to take shape at Pelahatchie High School, the administration and staff are eager to see how this innovative feature will enhance student success both inside and outside the classroom. By offering personalized education, support, and enrichment, PHS is ensuring that every student can thrive.
