HCC gives alumni awards, Krebs named to HCC Sports Hall of Fame
Phyllis Rhodes Krebs was inducted into the Hinds Community College (HCC) Sports Hall of Fame on October 29.  From the Shiloh community of Pelahatchie, she played high school basketball at East Rankin Academy (ERA), and then at HCC, 1981-1983, where she was the first female to receive the Eagle Award for Most Outstanding Athlete in any sport. She was also voted Most Valuable Player and All-State. The 1981 ERA valedictorian, Krebs played basketball at ERA under her father, Coach Billy Rhodes, from the ninth to twelfth grades. She was named an All-State basketball player. “I am honored and most humbled by this award,” said Krebs, a University of Southern Mississippi graduate who has taught high school math for 3 years. She first taught at Brandon High School, where she retired in 215, and is currently teaching at Hartfield Academy. Other Sports Hall of Fame inductees included Mike Burch, of Mobile, Ala., football, 1986-1987; Jeffrey Fields, of Baton Rouge, La., football, 1986-1987; Dwayne Green, of Fayetteville, Ga., soccer, 198-1987; and Jeff Long, of Meadville, baseball, 1987-1989. Non-sports award winners given by the Alumni Association and Hinds Community College Foundation include the two new awards Foundation/Alumni Hall of Fame and the Young Alumnus of the Year. President Emeritus Dr. Clyde Muse of Raymond received the inaugural Foundation Alumni Hall of Fame Award recognizing someone who has demonstrated over an extended period of time genuine interest and support of Hinds Community College. It’s the highest honor presented by the Foundation and Alumni Association. Dr. Christy Granberry Barrick of Madison received the Young Alumnus of the Year award, which recognizes an alumnus under the age of who has attained significant professional, personal or community success. Receiving the Alumnus of the Year Award was William Dunlap, who has a Mississippi residence in Mathiston as well as in McLean, Va., and Coral Gables, Fla. The Alumni Service Award recipient was Ken Coomes of Brandon.
