Coach Tyler Walters was named the Pelahatchie High School (PHS) Teacher of the Year for 2020-2021. He was recognized at Homecoming in October. He is in his second year as teacher of honors geometry and honors algebra 2 classes. He also coaches the football offensive and defensive line, the power lifting team, and the golf team.
According to PHS teachers, “Many of his students say that they truly understand math for the first time; he makes learning relevant and interactive - helping them understand difficult concepts. He consistently and proudly posts student work in the hallway for others to see the amazing things he is doing inside his classroom. This year, Coach Walters was forced to embrace technology in new and innovative ways. Almost daily, he excitedly shares ‘new-found’ interactive tools and websites with his colleagues.”
Beyond the classroom, Coach Walters is constantly “coaching up” kids – from behavior and academics to football and powerlifting and everything in between. In addition to coaching both offensive and defensive lines in football, he coordinates team meals and trip tickets. He and his family routinely provide goody bags for football players and the cheer team.
Handwritten notes of encouragement from Coach Tyler Walters can be found all around campus – written to students, teachers, administrators, and even other coaches. However, these notes and cards cannot come close to matching the amount of verbal affirmations and encouragements from Coach Walters.
PHS would like to thank our local sponsors, Fairway Foods and Country Boys for their sponsorship of our Teacher of the Year Award. Fairway Foods is honoring Coach Walters with a steak dinner, and Country Boys provided an Igloo drink cooler.
