Pelahatchie Tornado Sirens Repaired

Pelahatchie Tornado Sirens Repaired

By Shaun McInnish, Sr., City Beat Writer, Pelahatchie News

According to Mayor Karl VanHorn, Pelahatchie’s tornado sirens are now fully operational following the final repair on January 31. VanHorn states that the sirens underwent a successful test on February 3, confirming that all town-owned warning systems are in working order. During the February 3 Board of Aldermen meeting, officials announced the completion of repairs, ensuring that residents are protected ahead of peak storm season. When severe weather swept through the area on February 15, all town sirens activated as expected, marking the first time in over a year that Pelahatchie’s tornado warning system functioned at full capacity.

The only siren that did not sound was located at N. Brooks Street and Lake Road, which Mayor VanHorn says falls under Rankin County’s jurisdiction. While town officials continue to emphasize the importance of staying informed, residents can now rely on the fully restored siren network for immediate tornado warnings. Additionally, residents are encouraged to sign up for Rankin County’s weather alert text system, which provides real-time updates and can be accessed through their website at https://www.rankincounty.org/. With these upgrades, Pelahatchie is better prepared for the upcoming storm season, providing residents with an added layer of safety when severe weather strikes.
