Kessie Key was recently named the Pelahatchie High School (PHS) 2020-2021 Rural Teacher of the Year. In conjunction with the Mississippi Rural Education Association (MSREA) and the Program of Research and Education for Public Education (PREPS), the award was given to Key for her impact on rural student learning, collaboration as a member of the community, continuous learning, and leadership.
Key, a PHS graduate and 9-year PHS educator, said, “I am beyond blessed, and shocked to say the least, but very appreciative of the honor of being named PHS 2020-2021 Rural Teacher of the Year. Pelahatchie is home! I look forward to continuing to grow and learn with my Tribe. God is good. We are blessed with the BEST at PHS!”
Dr. Teague Burchfield said, "When considering candidates for this award, we looked for a homegrown educator who was dedicated to serving this community in unique ways. Mrs. Kessie Key checks all of the boxes; a lifelong resident of Pelahatchie, she serves not only as an effective classroom teacher but also as a tremendous link to the community as our social media coordinator. We are so proud of her and her service to the Pelahatchie community!"
A committee will review all nominations submitted based on evidence of impact of rural student learning, collaboration as a member of a rural community, continuous learning, and leadership. MSREA/PREPS will then recognize one winner for each Mississippi congressional district with one of those serving as the MSREA/PREPS Rural Teacher of the Year.
