When it comes to metals that people use every day, people usually think of stainless steel or iron. Metals have a long history of making up some of the devices we use every day and even the buildings we inhabit. A metal like copper may not seem like much, but you would be surprised at its many different applications. We’ll go over some of the uses of copper in our everyday lives to see how useful it can really be.
Jewelry
Copper is quite common in the jewelry industry. Anyone would think that a piece of gold jewelry is truly made of gold, but in actuality, most gold jewelry is made from an alloy with copper. 18 karat yellow gold, one of the most popular metals used in jewelry, is actually a mixture of gold and copper elements. Copper brings a lot of strength to jewelry, as gold on its own is actually quite weak.
Electronics
Probably one of the more well-known uses of copper in our everyday lives, copper’s ductility allows it to stretch into wires that we use in our home. People have used copper in electrical wiring for many years. Copper also can transmit electricity very efficiently, making it perfect for powering electronic appliances. Even your phone contains copper tubes that allow it to function.
Home Uses
Copper is a very commonly used material in the electrical and plumbing industries. For example, you probably have copper pipes in your plumbing system right now. Mechanics use them in electric motors because of their high conductivity of both heat and electricity. You might even have copper in your roofing, as it doesn’t need a lot of upkeep and it’s relatively long-lasting.
Medical
Many people in the medical field are interested in copper because of its
antimicrobial properties. Currently, many hospitals and clinics are trying to switch certain fixtures in their buildings so that they contain more copper. This copper helps kill latent bacteria and contributes to the safety of patients in the hospital or clinic’s care.
