Dr. Teague Burchfield,
Principal, Pelahatchie High School
The month of October brought to Pelahatchie High School the WAPT Channel 16 Food for Families Football Challenge. This event called for every zone in the Rankin County School District to donate canned goods for those in need. Pelahatchie High School gladly accepted the challenge!
The event started as we closed the first nine weeks by celebrating excellent attendance, academics, and attitudes during our "Chief Challenge." Students and teachers alike enjoyed a competitive obstacle course while also witnessing Mr. Hust, Mr. Nelson, and myself get "pied" in the face. Proceeds from the concession stand went to the purchase of canned goods for the "Challenge."
Each week during the month of October, we asked our students to compete by grade level to see who could donate the most canned goods. Through competition, each grade level was able to push each other for the "Challenge." Not to be outdone, Pelahatchie Elementary joined in the event as well and served wonderfully.
To close the month of October, as well as to complete the "Challenge," clubs, organizations, as well as athletic teams developed a "Candy in the Courtyard" event for Pelahatchie Elementary School. Entry to the event was simply bringing a canned good to the event. This "Fall Festival" event was a fun opportunity for elementary students to play games and earn candy during the event. Later that day, the baseball and softball teams put together a co-ed softball game to assist in the event, as well. And, like the "Candy in the Courtyard" event, admission to the softball game was simply bringing a canned good to donate. All who were in attendance had a great time of service and fellowship.
What a great opportunity Pelahatchie High School had to provide such a worthy service to those in need. Our students, faculty, staff, and community should feel proud for their efforts! As we transition to the season of Thanksgiving, let’s be grateful for all that we have as well as the opportunity to provide for others in their time of need. On behalf of Pelahatchie High School, Happy Thanksgiving, and Go Chiefs!
