MWF launched a new program designed to help recruit, retain and reactivate Mississippi’s women into outdoor pursuits, wildlife conservation and shooting sports and angling skills called the Mississippi Society of Sportswomen. Traditionally, these have been male-dominated activities, but our goal is to help provide both introductory level skills to interested ladies, as well as provide avenues for ladies already involved with these pursuits to meet and enjoy these activities together. We’ve seen firsthand that women love learning from other outdoorswomen who are seasoned, experienced and have a true passion and joy for these sports through hands-on education and expert-driven instruction. From shotgun skills workshops, introduction to gun safety and even concealed carry workshops, we’ll get you comfortable with firearm and hunting safety, as well as Mississippi hunting laws. We also help put together hunts throughout the year, hold fishing rodeos, field dressing workshops, and have started holding “ladies power hours” during the annual Mississippi Wildlife Extravaganza with ladies hunting and angling experts, as well as ladies pro staff, on-hand to give expert advice and tips.
In October, MWF held a ladies dove hunt in Jefferson County, Mississippi. Even though the doves were pretty scarce that weekend, we had a great time enjoying the beautiful weather, food, fellowship & teaching some delightful younger (& older) gals gun safety, shooting skills and target practice – using skeet machines and stationary target stands and bases. We even managed to squeeze in some fishing! A special thank you to our partner for the event, Artemis, and our sponsor, Winchester, who provided the ammo. All in all, a good day being “wild” in the great Mississippi outdoors.
We are excited to bring together different outdoor ladies groups as we go forward. If your group is interested in becoming a partner and holding or participating in a group event, please email Robin Carlin at [email protected] to get involved. We’ll be holding special events throughout the year in different areas of the state.
