Nelson named PHS assistant principal
Philip Nelson was named the new Pelahatchie High School (PHS) assistant principal. “Mr. Nelson comes to us with 21 years of experience in education. Nineteen of those twenty-one years were earned in the Rankin County School District with his last six years spent as transportation supervisor of the Brandon zone,” said Dr. Teague Burchfield, principal. Nelson has taught seventh-grade math, pre-algebra, transition to algebra, advanced algebra, trigonometry, geometry, keyboarding, and computer applications. He has also served as a teacher trainer around the state. He has an undergraduate degree from Mississippi State University as well as an M.S. in technology. He said, “I am very excited to be at Pelahatchie this year. It is an opportunity to work in a school with less students which means more attention per young person.” Nelson and his wife, Christina, a teacher at Brandon Middle School, have three children, Jeremiah (1), Bradley (11), and Lucy Mae (8). Nelson replaces Bryan Collins who will serve as principal at Puckett High School.     Brandon High School, Brandon, MS (601) 825-2261 July 2014 to Present Brandon Zone Transportation Supervisor Brandon High School, Brandon, MS (601) 825-2261 August 2007 to July 2014 Teacher § Teacher of STEM and Learning Strategies § MARS Lead Teacher § Technology Club Sponsor RCU, Starkville, MS (662) 25-2510 Summer 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 201, & 2014 Fall 2010 & 2011 Spring 2012 CTE Teacher Trainer Rankin County School District, Brandon, MS (601) 825-2261 February 2004 to July 2014 § School bus route driver Brandon Middle School, Brandon, MS (601) 825-5998 August 2001 to May 2007 Teacher § Teacher of 7th Grade Math, Pre-Algebra, and Transition to Algebra § Chess Club Sponsor § Clock Operator for Home Basketball Games § State Test Administrator § Sponsor Student MECA Organization § BETA Club Co-sponsor Hinds Community College, Raymond, MS (601) 96-1801 January 2002 to July 2005 Adjunct Faculty (Rankin and Raymond campus) § Teacher of Basic Math, Elementary Algebra, and Intermediate Algebra Gulfshore Baptist Assembly, Pass Christian, MS (228) 452-7261 May 2004 to August 2004 House Parent § In charge of all summer staffers Maben High School, Maben, MS (662) 26-8106 August 1999 to May 2001 Teacher § Teacher of Advanced Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Pre-Algebra, Keyboarding, Computer Applications, and Jr. High Mathematics § Sponsor for the Computer Club and Math Club § High School Game Administrator Mississippi State Department of Education, Jackson, MS (601) 59-954 January 2001 to August 2001 Trainer § Phase 1 Trainer for the State Department Education: Mississippi State University, Mississippi State, MS M.S. in Technology, August 2001 Mississippi State University, Mississippi State, MS B.S. in Education, August 1999 Jones County Junior College, Ellisville, MS August 199 to May 1995 Professional memberships: MPE, Mississippi Public Educators  § Member since 1999 MAPT, Mississippi Association of Pupil Transportation § Member since 2016 MECA, Mississippi Educational Computing Association § Contest Committee Chair 2005-2007 § Executive Board Member 200-2005 § Member since 2000 § Presenter 2001, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 201, and 2014.
