It can be a little daunting to visit a bigger city, especially if you’re not used to navigating busy streets or if you feel nervous about parking and leaving your car in a strange new place. But don’t let the size of the place intimidate you. At car level, you just need to keep a few things in mind while driving around. To help, here are a few tips for protecting your car in a major city.
Keep It Secured
The first step, and this should be obvious, is to assess whether your car is a target. Locking it up before you leave is wise, but ensure there are no visible temptations for car thieves. Don’t leave behind packages, suitcases, or other receptacles that promise a quick score. If you have a security system, activate it and have a visible light or sticker that warns thieves it’s in effect. Finally, if you’re on vacation, don’t leave any big-ticket items like phones, cameras, and sound systems exposed.
Out in the Open
The next of our tips for protecting your car in a major city is to find a place to park that’s out in the open on a major street (if parking is available; some cities don’t allow parking on major thoroughfares). Few car thieves will attempt a break-in where they can be easily seen doing so. For double protection of both you and your car, park in a well-lit area. Darkness is a thief's best friend, and it allows them to either take their time breaking into your vehicle or surprising you.
Avoid the Street, Look for a Garage
Before you go, make a note of where your car can spend much of its time while you’re away for business or pleasure. Often there are deals for long-term parking. Well-lit parking lots and garages, especially those attended by valets and security, are safe places to park in the big city. Automated parking garages are your absolute best bet for safety and security, because the mechanical parking system takes your car to a spot that can’t be reached by anyone until you return to pick it up.
Appearances Count
One more level of protection for your car involves its appearance. Try to park away from too-busy areas where passing cars can sideswipe your vehicle and potentially scratch it or snap off your side mirrors. Avoid parking under trees, otherwise bird waste can destroy your car’s finish. When you leave the city and return home, be sure to get a car wash to clean all that big city grime off your vehicle. It’ll look good, and run better too!
