The decision to invest in a firearm is no small decision. A firearm purchase comes with a list of precautions to take into consideration. One important precaution is cleaning your gun. Keep reading to discover everything to know about cleaning your gun.
Clean the Barrel and Chamber
After you have a designated cleaning space ready, disassemble your gun to begin the cleaning process. Check the chamber and barrel for carbon buildup from being shot. Begin by taking a copper dry brush to the chamber. Use a back-and-forth motion, from chamber to muzzle, to brush out copper residue. Next, dip a cleaning patch in solvent. Place the patch, or poke the patch, on the end of the cleaning rod. Push the cleaning rod through the barrel. Do not pull it back out from where you inserted it in the barrel. Rather, repeatedly insert it through the barrel and pull it through. Use another cleaning patch to catch any extra sediment build up. With a bore snake, run light lubricant through the barrel to prevent corrosion in the future.
Lubricate the Action
Like the barrel, the action or slide needs cleaned with a dry brush first. Take a dry cloth to the slide after you have carefully used a dry brush. Next, spray action cleaner solvent on the slide generously. Follow the directions from the manufacture of your gun for following steps regarding the spray action cleaner. Lastly, and most importantly, don’t forget to lubricate the action on your gun. It will prevent friction between moving parts on your gun. It will prevent corrosion on your gun as well. If you are in a hurry and don’t have time to disassemble and clean at home, it’s suggested that you do as much cleaning as possible while you are at the range. If you don’t shoot as much as you’d like and are more focused on concealed carry, routinely check you have a lubricated action. While doing so, this is a good opportunity to clean your concealed carry holster as well.
Clean Down the Outside
The inner workings of your gun are clean, now what? Don’t overlook the importance of cleaning the outside of your firearm. Invest in a good gun cloth or reel cloth to get the job done. These cloths are treated with a silicone lubricant. Your gun will thank you for using a silicone lubricant cloth on it. It helps to remove debris buildup and acidic print in addition to keeping the outside of your firearm looking brand new.
Keep in mind that a clean gun is a reliable gun. The more reliable a gun is, the safer and more confident you will be when you shoot. Whether you are a beginner or have shot a firearm for years, cleaning a gun is a standard procedure everyone should implement.
