While many people focus on exhaust and engine upgrades, true motorcycle hobbyists know that brakes are just as essential. Brakes aren’t only for safety—they’re also the most effective method of controlling your bike. We’ve made a list of four ways to improve your motorcycle brakes, so read on!
Lighten Your Bike
Every unnecessary pound on your bike makes your brakes work a little harder. Many components have lightweight carbon fiber upgrades, so consider swapping out a part or two to reduce weight. Additionally, the vehicle-to-rider ratio is greater on a motorcycle than in a car. Therefore, consider an exercise routine for yourself. Every ounce counts, including yours!
Get Steel-Braided Brake Lines
Almost all stock motorcycles have rubber brake lines. While these get the job done, they’re much more likely to deteriorate than steel-braided brake lines. That’s because rubber lines flex as you pull the brake lever. This constant movement causes significant wear over time. Switching to steel makes your brakes last longer and increases their response time.
Upgrade Brake Pads
Your motorcycle’s stock brake pads are rudimentary. They’ll stop your bike, but they won’t do so efficiently. Even if you don’t plan on entering any races, upgraded brake pads are excellent for day-to-day riding. Ultra-high-performance pads won’t fade as quickly as stock pads, and they’ll grab better, too. If you only make one brake modification, make sure this is it!
Practice
Finally, there’s nothing better than having experience to ensure high brake performance. If you truly want to get the most out of your bike, you need to practice often. A great rider can get more out of bad brakes than a novice rider can get out of high-performance brakes. Take your bike to the track and put in some hours. Cornering is tricky, so make sure you devote the appropriate time to that skill.
Now that you know these four ways to improve your motorcycle brakes, you can make an upgrade or two and get onto the track!
